A Look at My Gratitude Journal: Relationships are Key

December 16, 2011

During a recent office move, across the hall, I rediscovered a “gratitude journal” that was given to me at the beginning of the year to encourage daily reflection on the things I am grateful for; both personal and professional. As with any New Year goal, I was more diligent at the beginning of the year with writing in the journal than at the end.Image

However, as I began to look through my journal, I started to see some trends of things I was thankful for daily. Throughout the course of roughly 11 months of entries, I noticed a repetitive trend in most entries that fit into three main focus areas: relationships, growth and new opportunities. What struck me was the importance of the first category, as relationships can bring growth and introduce new opportunity.

The challenge for us, as marketers, is to consistently find time to sit down and reflect on our relationships, both personal and professional, and make sure that we continue to grow them. As we are winding down the year, I would encourage us all to recognize our blessings and reflect on them daily, so that we can both grow and give thanks where thanks is due. And while recognizing your gratitude for people in your life, it may not be a bad idea to send them a quick email or phone call to say so. Here are a few goals I have to help build relationships in 2012:

  1. Make the most of the lunch hour and to schedule a quick break with clients, past coworkers and family. Sometimes getting out of the office does wonders for our conversations and energizes us the rest of the day.
  2. When someone crosses your mind, send them an email. It has worked well for me to send a quick email to a client, vendor or friend during the day and ask how they are doing and if I can help them with anything. Short, sweet and keeps the connection.
  3. Keep a gratitude journal, much like the one I received. Take five minutes at the end of each day and write down five things that you are thankful for that day. Taking time to realize your blessings in life keeps you going and makes you the best version of yourself.

What are some tips you have to keep up with people in your life? Please share so I can add them to my list.
