2012 Olympics complicated by social media

If you’re like me, then you’re completely in love with the Olympics.

I was geeked out as the countdown to the Olympics ticked away, and was glued to my TV during the opening ceremony last Friday. Everyone has been talking about how this Olympics would be impacted by social media and apps specifically created to help people keep up with the Olympic results and news.

Sites like The Olympic Athletes’ Hub, which allows you to get official Facebook and Twitter updates from your favorite Olympians and even earn badges and rewards for being the ultimate fan, and the numerous apps like London 2012 Join In have given Olympic fans access to the games and athletes like never before.

I think the biggest challenge over the past few days of watching the Olympics has been avoiding Twitter, Facebook and other sites live streaming competitions for fear of seeing the results before the competition is televised in the U.S. Some Olympics viewers are so peeved at all the results spoilers, that they’re using their social media pages to complain about the tape delay with the hashtag #NBCFail.

Even with all the complaints, I think the opening ceremony foreshadowed just how much social media would play a part of the 2012 games. The final scene of the show called “Frankie and June Say, Thanks Tim,” gives a nod to Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and the reason you’re able to read this blog on your computer right now, ended with Tim live tweeting from the middle of the stadium. His tweet: “This is for everyone #london2012 #oneweb #openingceremony @webfoundation @w3c” lit up around the stadium for everyone to see.

A fitting reminder that this social world we’ve created should be open to everyone and we must continue to make it better.
